Indonesian Journal of Islamic Law (IJIL)

The Indonesian Journal of Islamic Law (IJIL) (P-ISSN: 3089-5839 | E-ISSN: 2615-7543) is a peer-reviewed scholarly journal published biannually (June and December) by the Postgraduate Programme of Universitas Islam Negeri (UIN) Kiai Haji Achmad Siddiq Jember, Indonesia, and managed by the Department of Islamic Family Law. Established in 2018, IJIL is dedicated to advancing theory-driven, socio-legal, and empirically grounded research on Islamic law, with a particular focus on Muslim societies in Southeast Asia and the Global South.

IJIL approaches Islamic law not merely as a normative doctrinal system but as a dynamic legal and ethical practice shaped by social institutions, political authority, historical legacies, and contemporary transformations. The journal promotes transformative ijtihād, critical legal reasoning, and interdisciplinary inquiry that bridges classical Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh and uṣūl al-fiqh) with current challenges in governance, family law, economy, technology, and social justice.

Distinctively, IJIL foregrounds Global South perspectives as an epistemic standpoint, encouraging locally grounded, comparative, and context-sensitive analyses that challenge Eurocentric, state-centric, and purely textualist approaches to Islamic law. The journal prioritises contributions that demonstrate clear theoretical engagement, methodological rigour, and analytical depth, particularly through socio-legal, qualitative, comparative, and interdisciplinary methodologies.

By fostering critical dialogue between Sharīʿah, society, and modern legal institutions, IJIL serves as an international platform for scholarship on Islamic law that is both intellectually rigorous and socially consequential, contributing to global debates on legal reform, public ethics, and justice in the contemporary Muslim world.

“A journal of socio-legal innovation and transformative ijtihad in Muslim societies, particularly in Southeast Asia and the Global South.”

Since its inception in 2018, the IJIL (Indonesian Journal of Islamic Law) has published articles by distinguished scholars from 5 continents—Asia, Africa, America, Australia, and Europe—and from over 45 countries, including Indonesia, Malaysia, China, Canada, Australia, South Africa, South Korea, the United Kingdom, the United States, Tunisia, Türkiye, Uganda, Sudan, Iran, India, Sri Lanka, Morocco, France, Armenia, Austria, Sweden, Germany, Algeria, the Philippines, Belgium, Spain, Uzbekistan, Pakistan, Jordan, Brunei Darussalam, Lebanon, the Russian Federation, and Greece, among others.
