About the Journal

The Indonesian Journal of Islamic Law (IJIL) (P-ISSN: 3089-5839 | E-ISSN: 2615-7543) is a peer-reviewed, open-access scholarly journal published biannually (June and December) by the Postgraduate Programme of Universitas Islam Negeri (UIN) Kiai Haji Achmad Siddiq Jember, Indonesia, and managed by the Department of Islamic Family Law. Established in 2018, the IJIL is dedicated to publishing original, high-quality research on Islamic law as a discursive and institutional phenomenon, with particular attention to ijtihād, legal reasoning, and perspectives from the Global South. The journal seeks to advance scholarly understanding of how Islamic law is interpreted, institutionalised, contested, and reformed within social, political, and legal institutions—especially in Southeast Asia and other Global South contexts—while contributing to international debates on Islamic law, legal pluralism, and legal change.

The journal is supported by a globally diverse editorial team comprising scholars and practitioners from leading institutions across Asia, Africa, Europe, America, and Australia. Its editorial board includes internationally recognised experts in Islamic law, socio-legal studies, legal anthropology, gender studies, comparative law, and legal theory affiliated with institutions such as SOAS University of London; Georgetown University in Qatar; the University of Pittsburgh School of Law; the University of Melbourne; the University of Michigan; École Pratique des Hautes Études; Hamad Bin Khalifa University; the International Islamic University Malaysia; the National University of Singapore; and Universiteit Maastricht, alongside prominent Indonesian institutions, including Universitas Islam Negeri Kiai Haji Achmad Siddiq Jember, Universitas Islam Negeri Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta, Universitas Jember, and the Religious Courts under the Supreme Court of the Republic of Indonesia. The editorial team brings together established and emerging scholars with strong research profiles and demonstrated expertise in Islamic legal studies, ensuring rigorous peer review, intellectual pluralism, and broad international perspectives in the journal’s editorial decision-making processes.

The IJIL welcomes contributions from scholars and practitioners employing socio-legal, qualitative, comparative, and interdisciplinary approaches to the study of Islamic law. Its scope includes, but is not limited to, the following areas: Islamic Law and Socio-Legal Transformation; Judicial Institutions, Governance, and Legal Authority; Family Law, Gender, and Social Justice; Islamic Legal Thought, Uṣūl al-Fiqh, and Maqāṣid al-Sharīʿah; Global South, Postcolonial, and Decolonial Approaches to Islamic Law; Digital Society, Technology, and Contemporary Fatwa Practices; and Islamic Law, Public Ethics, and Economic Governance.

Since its inception, IJIL has published contributions from scholars across more than thirty countries and five continents, reflecting its commitment to international dialogue, intellectual diversity, and comparative scholarship. All submissions undergo a rigorous double-blind peer-review process in accordance with international publication ethics. The journal strives to maintain an efficient editorial workflow, with an initial editorial decision typically issued within approximately 30 days of submission.

Currently, IJIL is nationally accredited by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology of Indonesia and indexed in several international scholarly databases, including DOAJ. Articles published in the journal have received citations from publications indexed in Scopus and Web of Science, reflecting increasing international academic engagement. Citation records and related metrics can be identified through Google Scholar, Dimensions, and secondary document searches in Scopus and Web of Science.

IJIL operates under a full open-access policy. All published articles are freely accessible and distributed under the Creative Commons Attribution–ShareAlike 4.0 International License (CC BY-SA 4.0), ensuring wide dissemination, reuse, and citation without restriction. The journal accepts manuscripts in English and Arabic, reinforcing its mission to foster cross-regional scholarly communication and global academic exchange.

To ensure long-term digital preservation, IJIL participates in the PKP Preservation Network (PKP PN) using the LOCKSS system, which guarantees perpetual access through a distributed archival infrastructure. The journal also supports the CLOCKSS initiative, providing an additional layer of controlled, decentralised preservation.
